Participants will learn how to design and improve internal controls by pairing the COSO Internal Control framework with LEAN process thinking, practical IT governance touchpoints, and risk-based prioritization. Participants will analyze common control gaps in SMEs and translate them into streamlined processes, clear documentation, and sustainable monitoring routines.

  • Apply LEAN concepts to reduce waste and complexity while strengthening control effectiveness. 
  • Incorporate technology considerations—data quality, access and authorization, cloud and e-commerce risks—into an IT governance approach. 
  • Establish documentation and monitoring practices that evidence design and operating effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.

  • Risk management foundations and why internal controls matter; major risks they address. 
  • Effective business processes and LEAN Finance concepts that reinforce controls. 
  • COSO Internal Control framework: control environment, risk assessment, information systems, control activities, and monitoring. 
  • Technology themes: IT governance, data governance, access and authorization controls, and cloud/e-commerce considerations. 
  • Fraud touchpoints: fraud principles, risk indicators, and control responses. 
  • Documentation standards and monitoring routines; practical wrap-up and action planning.
