Internal Controls - Business Process Improvements (Live Webinar - Multi Segment)
Overview
This is a hands-on course intended to give new, experienced, financial leaders an opportunity to update their knowledge of internal controls using the COSO Framework. The course also includes exploration of LEAN management concepts that can be applied to the development of internal controls, the COBIT framework for IT controls, and a brief look at how to detect and prevent fraud.

Course Description
Applicable for
- Professionals in finance management, risk, or governance roles (from early-career to experienced controllers and finance leaders) who want a practical controls refresh.
- Teams in SMEs (and NFPs) seeking scalable control designs that also improve process efficiency.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain core COSO components and map them to major business cycles and risks.
- Identify high-impact control activities (including segregation of duties and anti-override measures) and align them with process improvements.
- Apply LEAN concepts to reduce waste and complexity while strengthening control effectiveness.
- Incorporate technology considerations—data quality, access and authorization, cloud and e-commerce risks—into an IT governance approach.
- Establish documentation and monitoring practices that evidence design and operating effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.

Topics include:
- Risk management foundations and why internal controls matter; major risks they address.
- Effective business processes and LEAN Finance concepts that reinforce controls.
- COSO Internal Control framework: control environment, risk assessment, information systems, control activities, and monitoring.
- Technology themes: IT governance, data governance, access and authorization controls, and cloud/e-commerce considerations.
- Fraud touchpoints: fraud principles, risk indicators, and control responses.
- Documentation standards and monitoring routines; practical wrap-up and action planning.

Live webinars have varying levels of expected interaction, with some requiring microphone and camera capabilities to support a proper learning experience – please email pdreg@bccpa.ca if you have concerns.
In general, we encourage participants to have their cameras turned on to enhance their virtual learning experience. This practice promotes a stronger connection with the instructor and fellow participants, and fosters improved communication and collaboration.
