Personal Tax - Compliance and Planning in T1 Preparation (Live Webinar - Multi Segment)
Overview
Participants will develop a practical, end-to-end understanding of Canadian personal tax return preparation, from residency and income characterization through credits, computations, administration, and provincial considerations. Participants will also learn to identify planning opportunities that commonly arise during T1 preparation and to validate tax software outputs.

Learning Objectives
- Identify and evaluate issues that impact personal income tax filings, including residency, source rules, and reporting requirements.
- Analyze income and deduction items across employment, business, property, capital transactions, and other common areas to determine appropriate T1 reporting.
- Assess planning alternatives available during return preparation and document the rationale for selected treatments.
- Validate the reasonableness of tax software results and reconcile them to underlying computations.

- Liability for Canadian tax: residency determinations, taxable income scope, and administrative positions.
- Employment income: employment vs. self-employment, taxable benefits and allowances, automobile benefits, stock options, and key deductions.
- Retirement and registered plans: OAS/CPP, RRSP/RRIF mechanics, pension splitting/divisions, HBP/LLP, and over-contribution considerations.
- Property income and shareholder issues: dividends (eligible/non-eligible), shareholder benefits/loans, interest accrual rules, and attribution.
- Capital gains/losses: ACB mechanics, deemed dispositions, principal residence exemption, QSBC/QFFP/other exemptions, and AMT touchpoints.
- Business income and deductions: general principles vs. specific limitations, CCA (including acceleration/expensing), automobiles, interest rules, and reserves.
- Other income/deductions & credits: support, moving, childcare, medical, tuition, donations, disability, and key refundable/non-refundable credits.
- Computation, administration, and provincial items: rates/credits, foreign tax relief, alternative minimum tax, filing/assessment/reassessment, penalties/interest, disclosure, and provincial variations.

Jennifer Reid, CPA, CGA, TEP is a Partner in People Advisory Services Tax at EY in Calgary. Jennifer specializes in assisting private clients with international tax and estate planning issues such as immigration and emigration, dual citizenship considerations, foreign inheritance and foreign investment and asset ownership. Jennifer also assists in designing meaningful executive compensation plans where cross border considerations are front of mind. Jennifer has practiced tax services in Calgary for over 16 years, with a focus on private companies and their owners, as well as trusts and estates. She has experience assisting clients in planning their estate, including considerations such as insurance, trust and probate planning, cross-border planning as well as in transitioning businesses to the next generation or new owners in a tax-efficient manner. Jennifer’s previous experience in Big Four and boutique tax groups, as well as unique experience gained in leading a wealth planning group at a financial institution, allows her to take a holistic approach to tax planning for entrepreneurial and high net worth clients.
