Corporate Tax - Compliance and Planning in T2 Preparation (Live Webinar - Multi Segment)
Overview
Participants will develop a practical, end-to-end understanding of Canadian corporate tax return preparation, from computing net income for tax purposes through to federal/provincial tax calculations and key disclosure requirements. Participants will also learn to identify planning opportunities that commonly arise during T2 preparation and to validate tax software outputs.

Learning Objectives
- Identify and evaluate issues that impact corporate income tax filings and T2 return completeness.
- Analyze corporate tax issues to determine appropriate reporting for income, deductions, losses, and credits.
- Assess planning alternatives that arise during return preparation and document the rationale for selected treatments.
- Validate the reasonableness of tax software results and reconcile them to underlying computations.
Content
- Net income for tax purposes: GAAP starting point and common adjustments (e.g., reserves, capital items, employee benefits, automobiles, meals/entertainment).
- Asset transactions: capital cost allowance (classes, acceleration, disposals), replacement property, non-arm’s-length transfers, and capital gains/loss mechanics.
- Taxable income and losses: donations, dividends and anti-avoidance touchpoints, loss utilization and acquisition-of-control impacts.
- Corporate relationships: arm’s-length concepts, control (de jure/de facto), related/affiliated/associated/connected corporations and their effects.
- Federal corporate taxes: Part I calculations (SBD/AAII/taxable capital limits), integration features, Part IV and refundable accounts, and key credits.
- Other issues and provincial considerations: filing/assessment/reassessment timelines, penalties/interest, disclosure, and high-level provincial variations.

Jennifer Reid, CPA, CGA, TEP is a Partner in People Advisory Services Tax at EY in Calgary. Jennifer specializes in assisting private clients with international tax and estate planning issues such as immigration and emigration, dual citizenship considerations, foreign inheritance and foreign investment and asset ownership. Jennifer also assists in designing meaningful executive compensation plans where cross border considerations are front of mind. Jennifer has practiced tax services in Calgary for over 16 years, with a focus on private companies and their owners, as well as trusts and estates. She has experience assisting clients in planning their estate, including considerations such as insurance, trust and probate planning, cross-border planning as well as in transitioning businesses to the next generation or new owners in a tax-efficient manner. Jennifer’s previous experience in Big Four and boutique tax groups, as well as unique experience gained in leading a wealth planning group at a financial institution, allows her to take a holistic approach to tax planning for entrepreneurial and high net worth clients.
