Practitioners who identify and address estate-planning needs for owner-managers and high-net-worth individuals.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to: 

  • Identify significant estate-planning issues for business owners and high-net-worth individuals and frame clear planning objectives. 
  • Analyze and compare post-mortem alternatives (e.g., pipeline, bump, loss-utilization) in fact-specific scenarios. 
  • Explain the role of trusts in estate planning, including key tax considerations and the need for flexibility. 
  • Evaluate the use of life insurance in estate and post-mortem strategies and articulate client-friendly recommendations. 
  • Recognize cross-border considerations at a high level, including U.S. estate and gift tax touchpoints.

Topics include: 

  • Planning for the deemed disposition at death and aligning goals with family/business realities. 
  • Using trusts in estate planning: fundamentals, flexibility, and risk management. 
  • Post-mortem planning alternatives and decision frameworks. 
  • Life insurance in planning: roles, structures, and integration with corporate/shareholder contexts. 
  • Cross-border considerations: high-level U.S. estate and gift tax issues for Canadian clients. 
  • Case study: applying the planning process to a comprehensive fact pattern.
