Overview

The course covers the basics of Canadian and US tax residency, and how that affects taxation. We will review the fundamentals of Canadians who own legacy US assets such as IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401Ks. The course will also cover major issues Canadians should be aware of due to the differences between Canadian and US taxation.

Course Description

With the ever growing amount of Canadians who have US ties, it is critical to know the basics of the tax issues these individuals experience and when to refer them to a trusted advisor. We will use real life examples of major tax issues these individuals can experience, and how you can help them by educating them and referring them to a trusted expert in this area. Clients appreciate the fact that you are looking out for them, and this is one more area that you can have insights for your client and help them through a challenging area.

Applicable for

CPAs in public practice helping individuals with their taxation, owner/managers.

Content

  • Understand what constitutes a US tax resident.
  • Be aware of an IRA account, Roth IRA account, and 401K account, what the tax aspects of these accounts are.
  • Be aware of other US tax issues that exist for Canadians.

Live webinars have varying levels of expected interaction, with some requiring microphone and camera capabilities to support a proper learning experience – please email pdreg@bccpa.ca if you have concerns. 

In general, we encourage participants to have their cameras turned on to enhance their virtual learning experience. This practice promotes a stronger connection with the instructor and fellow participants, and fosters improved communication and collaboration.
