Overview

Participants will gain an understanding of the most common GST/HST audit exposure issues and areas and how to mitigate them before an audit commences. 

Applicable for

  • Professionals who want a deeper understanding of GST/HST audit issues that are commonly reassessed by CRA auditors during an audit. 

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and reduce common audit exposures, including ITC documentation, meals and entertainment limits, taxable benefits, reimbursements, non-collection of tax, related party supplies, real property transactions, place of supply errors, and selected currency and pricing issues.

Content

  • Common exposures:
    • ITC eligibility and documentation, meals and entertainment, taxable benefits, non-employee reimbursements, non-collection and rate errors, related-party transactions (including nil-consideration elections), real property transaction reporting obligations (including self-assessments), place-of-supply issues, and selected special topics (e.g., foreign currency, forfeited deposits, deferred price adjustments).

David Crawford, CPA, is a former partner of the large international firm environment, who has broken from the pack to work with servicing clients of the small- to medium-sized accounting and law firms across the country. David has worked in the practice area for over 25 years and runs his practice from his Calgary office. David has worked in both public practice (Big 4+) and government and has been assisting clients with indirect tax controversy and audit support for much of his career, while also devising unique indirect tax solutions, including savings opportunities and managing indirect tax compliance risks. David frequently publishes indirect tax blogs, but also writes and instructs CPA Canada indirect tax courses.
