Designed to impact workplace culture and encourage allyship through novel personal perspectives, this course normalizes differences through authentic, lived experiences shared by subject-matter experts from a wide spectrum of varying disabilities on a variety of real-world topics. Course Description

This course was created to authentically bring disability into the DEI conversation where it belongs. Most teams, leaders and colleagues want to be equitable and inclusive but just haven’t been given the opportunity to understand disability from the perspective of those with disabilities. Messages from our cast of subject-matter experts with disabilities guarantee to encourage employee engagement, emotive learning and allyship beyond what regulatory training courses achieve. Assumptions, stereotypes and biases are challenged with common sense scenarios that foster comfort, confidence and competence with respect to disability.

Applicable for

When management and/or colleagues are not particularly familiar with the diversity of disability or members of the disability community, the topic is often avoided entirely. That can lead to awkward interactions, missed opportunities… a workplace culture that doesn’t feel inclusive, even with the best intentions. The course is designed as an instrument for personal reflection and growth for leadership, management and employee teams.

Learning Objectives

With this course, you will:

  • Gain insights into lived experience for new perspectives, and subsequently comfort, confidence and competence for better disability literacy.
  • Be equipped to amplify allyship with colleagues and clients with a disability.
  • Appreciate what's needed to move workplaces forward with intention over legislation, and confidence over hesitance.

Content

Topics like ableism, unconscious bias, disability language and etiquette, media portrayals and “inspiration exhaustion” are explored through common, and often unintentional, micro-aggressions that impact the lives of disabled individuals in the workplace and beyond. Through authentic experiences and perspectives, strategies and solutions to recognize, confront and change workplace culture are presented as better practices for meaningful inclusion.
