Overview

Participants will learn a practical, scalable approach to risk management for small and medium-sized organizations, emphasizing clear roles, simple processes, and decision-ready outputs. Participants will apply an enterprise-level mindset to identify, prioritize, treat, and monitor risks so strategy and operations can proceed with fewer surprises and stronger governance.

 


This live virtual seminar is offered in collaboration with CPA Western Provinces. The content is applicable to all participants. BC registrants can access the course materials and virtual meeting link through CPABC's Learning Management System (LMS) as usual. Please note that this virtual seminar will be hosted by CPA Alberta.   • CFOs, board members, and professionals in SMEs (including NFPs and public sector units) who hold risk-management responsibilities.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how an enterprise risk management (ERM) framework supports strategy and performance in smaller organizations.
  • Make strategic and operational decisions through a risk lens, aligning choices with context and risk appetite.
  • Use core tools and templates to identify, assess, prioritize, treat, and monitor risks.
  • Communicate risk effectively to senior leaders, boards, and stakeholders using concise reports and routines.

Content

  • Risk management foundations: key definitions, benefits, and links to recognized standards (e.g., ISO-style principles).
  • Context and risk appetite: clarifying objectives, constraints, and tolerance.
  • Core process: risk identification; qualitative/quantitative assessment; prioritization and treatment planning; monitoring and reporting cadences.
  • Strategy through a risk lens: integrating risk into planning, budgeting, and project/initiative selection.
  • Tools and templates: heat maps, registers, treatment action plans, and simple dashboards tailored to SMEs.
