Overview

This course considers the unique position of professional accountants and provides a framework to use when addressing unethical situations at work. We examine case studies and use the framework to determine the best course of action. This course shows CPA members how to practice principled decision-making in the face of ethically challenging situations. Our objective is the member’s personal growth and career development, reduced risk of unethical behaviour, and improved overall performance in the member’s organization.

This course will help the learner take an ethical approach that produces the best long term value for your organization.

Course Description

This course provides a detailed walkthrough of business ethics in the Canadian context. It contextualizes challenging ethical issues that CPA members and their organizations are facing across the country. Keeping the CPA Code of Conduct in mind, it provides detailed step-by-step guidance on how to deal with unethical situations as an individual and as a business. It also discusses ways to promote and enforce ethical behaviour in the workplace. Case studies are used to contextualize theoretical concepts and frameworks, so that all CPA members feel confident tackling tough situations and cultivating ethical workplace environments. 

Applicable for

This course is designed for all CPA members across Canada in the corporate, not-for-profit and public sectors, including board members, managers, auditors, controllers and other staff.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • identify the returns on investment from ethical business practices
  • describe the types of ethical situations faced by professional accountants
  • apply a step-by-step framework to navigate ethical dilemmas
  • apply a step-by-step framework to make complex business decisions with ethical considerations
  • assess case studies and apply frameworks to identify the best possible course of action
  • identify high risk behaviours of employees that may indicate underlying ethical issues
  • identify indicators of widespread ethical misconduct in an organization
  • assess an organization’s strengths and weaknesses using an ethics risk analysis
