Overview

Participants will strengthen their ability to interpret and apply the CPA Code of Professional Conduct in realistic workplace situations, using clear frameworks for judgment and documentation. Participants will examine current and emerging ethics challenges and practice responding through interactive cases, collaborative discussion, and decision-making exercises.

 


This live virtual seminar is offered in collaboration with CPA Western Provinces. The content is applicable to all participants.

 

Applicable for

  • CPAs and accounting professionals at all career stages and in any sector who want a practical, case-driven refresh on ethics.  

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how the CPA Code of Professional Conduct is structured and use it as a primary resource for ethical decision-making. 
  • Identify emerging ethics themes (e.g., sustainability, transformational technologies, AML/anti-corruption, tax planning) and assess their implications for professional responsibilities. 
  • Apply a practical decision-making framework to analyze scenarios, evaluate options, and document rationale. 
  • Interpret and apply relevant provisions of the CPA Code to resolve dilemmas, including when to seek guidance or escalate. 
  • Compare Canadian requirements with international codes and recognize when global standards or best practices can inform professional judgment.  

Content

  • Orientation to professional standards: how codes of conduct are organized across provinces/territories and at the international level. 
  • Fundamentals of the CPA Code: principles, definitions, rules, and guidance; characteristics of a profession; professional behavior expectations. 
  • Current challenges for CPAs: sustainability reporting, transformational technologies, AML/anti-corruption, and tax planning considerations. 
  • Interactive learning: collaborative multiple-choice prompts and scenario-based case studies using a decision-making framework. 
  • Applying judgment: documenting decisions, communicating outcomes, and reinforcing an ethics-first culture.

He graduated with an MBA from the Edinburgh Business School and an MA in Applied and Professional Ethics from the University of Leeds (Distinction). His career has spanned technical accounting, risk management, internal audit, and corporate compliance, working in public accounting (PwC) and for corporations in the United States and Canada. He has taught technical accounting and finance classes to corporate employees in several countries, been a conference speaker, university lecturer, and currently teaches courses on accounting ethics, business ethics, and the ethics of artificial intelligence.

This is a highly interactive workshop, and participants are strongly encouraged to have access to audio (mic) and video (camera) capabilities.
