Overview

Participants will build practical awareness of ethical dimensions embedded in day-to-day accounting and broader business contexts, drawing on moral philosophy, psychology, and real-world cases. Participants will apply structured decision-making frameworks to analyze dilemmas (including whistleblowing, CSR/ESG, and organizational pressures) and articulate defensible, code-aligned actions.

This live virtual seminar is offered in collaboration with CPA Western Provinces. The content is applicable to all participants.

Applicable for

  • CPAs and accounting professionals at all levels and in all sectors seeking a practical, case-driven ethics refresher.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain foundational approaches to moral philosophy and relate them to the responsibilities of business professionals.
  • Analyze individual decision-making using behavioural/psychological concepts (e.g., moral development, moral disengagement, conformity, and fear) and identify threats to objectivity.
  • Evaluate whistleblowing considerations and justify appropriate escalation paths using a structured framework.
  • Discuss ethical dimensions of stakeholder management, CSR, and ESG reporting, and outline implications for professional judgment.
  • Apply a practical decision-making framework to realistic scenarios and document a rationale that aligns with professional codes.

Content

  • Ethics foundations for CPAs: branches of philosophy and schools of ethics; what we are studying and why it matters.
  • Ethics and the individual: fast/slow morality, moral development and disengagement, “dirty hands,” and whistleblowing considerations.
  • Ethics and culture: moral blindness, ethical distance, routines, performance pressure, time pressure, and the role/limits of compliance programs.
  • Purpose of business: shareholder vs. stakeholder perspectives, corporate responsibility history, and reflection activities.
  • Case-based learning: contemporary business ethics case studies to practice analysis and decision-making.
