Overview

Many have heard of Python due to its popularity, but it is also known for its steep learning curve at the beginning for people who never learn to program. What if there is an alternative that is arguably more powerful than Python for data analyses, also open-source (i.e. free), and yet, much more friendly to non-programming-background people? Let’s scope this appealing language called “R”!

This session will run as a live hands-on seminar. To ensure participants can follow along, setup needs to be completed in advance. This allows participants to begin fully prepared to focus our time on the core material.

Technical Requirements

Please ensure all technical requirements are completed before the start of the seminar.

  1. Personal laptop. Windows is preferred, as the session will be demonstrated on Windows, though macOS is also acceptable.
Note: Company-managed devices often restrict software installation, which may prevent setup.
  2. Install R (see Get Started with R)
  3. Install Positron (see Get Started with Positron)
  4. Install Quarto (see Get Started with Quarto)

Course Description

This seminar provides hands-on experience in completing a comprehensive accounting project through a modern analytics approach. Audience will learn using R to streamline a typical accounting task that produces ready-to-distribute outputs (like PDFs, webpages, Excel workbooks), inspiring to dramatically enhance their accounting workflows.

We will also delve into key mindsets of analytics professionals and feel the synergy between analytics and accounting. The seminar will conclude with an overview of the current analytics and technology landscape, highlighting how accountants can pivot/capitalize on these trends.
