Overview

Participants will develop a practical, end-to-end understanding of revenue recognition under ASPE Section 3400, including recognition, measurement, presentation, and disclosure across common arrangements. Participants will apply the guidance to real-world scenarios such as multiple-element arrangements, construction contracts, bill-and-hold, non-refundable upfront fees, and gross-versus-net presentation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to: 

  • Identify the sales arrangement (units of account), determine when to combine or separate contracts, and assess multiple-element arrangements. 
  • Determine when revenue is recognized, including delivery, customer acceptance, rights of return, consignment, and bill-and-hold scenarios. 
  • Allocate consideration and measure revenue for multi-element arrangements, and evaluate completed-contract versus percentage-of-completion methods where applicable. 
  • Assess presentation decisions (gross vs. net) and draft clear, entity-specific revenue policy and disclosure notes.

  • Scope and fundamentals of ASPE 3400; key recognition criteria and documentation. 
  • Determining the sales arrangement: combining contracts; units of account; side arrangements; customary business practices. 
  • Revenue timing topics: delivery and customer acceptance; rights of return; consignment; layaway; bill-and-hold; non-refundable upfront and licensing fees. 
  • Long-term contracts: completed-contract vs. percentage-of-completion; measuring progress; contract costs; onerous losses; illustrative disclosures. 
  • Multiple-element arrangements: identifying components, transaction price, allocation, and element-by-element recognition. 
  • Presentation and disclosure: gross vs. net indicators; policy disclosure examples; measurement uncertainty; pass-through costs; vendor-to-customer payments. 
  • Other revenue-related topics: investment income linkages, franchisor considerations, and rental-income touchpoints.
