Overview

Is your budgeting process struggling to keep pace with changing market conditions, increasing complexity, or greater uncertainty in your operating environment? If your organization is questioning whether traditional budgeting approaches still support effective planning and decision making, this course provides a practical starting point for exploring alternative methods.

This course introduces participants to advanced budgeting techniques used to strengthen planning discipline, improve forecast quality, and enhance decision support. The session is designed to bridge the gap between traditional budgeting practices and more advanced approaches by introducing three widely used frameworks: activity based budgeting, beyond budgeting, and integrated business planning. These techniques are addressed at an understanding and application awareness level, focusing on concepts, decision logic, and practical implications rather than detailed system design or implementation planning.

Instruction is supported by structured discussion, illustrative examples, and applied exercises that emphasize comprehension and managerial relevance. This course is intended for professionals who already work with budgets and forecasts and are seeking a structured introduction to advanced budgeting approaches without the expectation of developing or executing full implementation roadmaps within a single session.

This course has offering(s) that take place over multiple segments:
Jun 25 & 26, 2026 | 9:00am-12:30pm

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to advanced budgeting techniques that extend beyond foundational budgeting mechanics. Building on core concepts, participants will be introduced to three advanced budgeting frameworks commonly used in more mature planning environments: activity based budgeting, beyond budgeting, and integrated business planning. The emphasis is on understanding the purpose of each approach, the problems they are designed to address, and how they differ from traditional budgeting models.

Rather than focusing on detailed implementation steps, system configurations, or organizational change programs, the course concentrates on conceptual understanding, decision implications, and practical considerations for when and where these techniques may be appropriate. Participants will also explore advanced forecasting concepts, variance analysis as a management tool, strategic alignment, and the integration of risk considerations into budgeting discussions. The course is designed to strengthen judgment, improve planning conversations, and provide a foundation for future, more in depth study or implementation work.

Applicable for

This session is best suited for managers and executives involved in financial planning, resource allocation, and performance monitoring who are exploring alternative budgeting approaches to better align planning with current business dynamics, without the expectation of designing or executing a full budgeting transformation.

Financial analysts or professionals in similar roles who want exposure to advanced budgeting frameworks to strengthen analysis, evaluation, and management conversations will also benefit from this course.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the objectives, structure, and use cases for activity based budgeting, beyond budgeting, and integrated business planning at a conceptual and managerial level
  • Recognize how advanced budgeting techniques support strategic alignment and improve the quality of planning and decision making
  • Interpret budget variances using a structured analytical lens to identify performance gaps and management implications
  • Identify how budgeting information supports investment evaluation and long term value considerations without developing detailed financial models
  • Understand how risk assessment concepts can be incorporated into budgeting assumptions and planning discussions
  • Communicate budget information more effectively to support understanding, engagement, and informed management dialogue
