Overview

This course introduces the core IFRS standards governing financial instruments, focusing on classification, measurement, impairment, presentation, and disclosure requirements. Participants will develop a practical understanding of how to apply these standards to a variety of financial instrument scenarios using real-world examples and current developments.

 


This live virtual seminar is offered in collaboration with CPA Western Provinces. The content is applicable to all participants.

Applicable for

  • Professionals involved in the accounting, presentation, or disclosure of financial instruments. 

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the classification categories for financial assets and financial liabilities under IFRS and determine the appropriate category for various instruments. 
  • Assess whether an instrument or its components represent equity, a liability, or a derivative using IAS 32 principles. 
  • Describe the initial and subsequent measurement models for financial assets and financial liabilities, including derecognition and offsetting considerations. 
  • Apply the IFRS 9 expected credit loss impairment model and understand common areas that require significant judgment. 
  • Explain the key presentation and disclosure requirements related to financial instruments, including those for derivatives, embedded derivatives, and hedge accounting.

  • Overview and scope of IFRS financial instrument standards. 
  • Classification and reclassification of financial assets and liabilities. 
  • Initial recognition, subsequent measurement, derecognition, and offsetting. 
  • Impairment and the expected credit loss model. 
  • Presentation and disclosure requirements under IFRS. 
  • Derivatives, embedded derivatives, and hedging. 
  • Current and emerging developments related to financial instruments.
