Overview

Effective budgeting is essential to aligning organizational priorities, managing performance, and supporting informed decision-making. This course explores a structured, organization-wide approach to budgeting that combines foundational concepts with advanced techniques. You will learn how to build reliable budgets, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and connect budgeting activities to organizational goals while incorporating modern tools and emerging technologies.


This live virtual seminar is offered in collaboration with CPA Western Provinces. The content is applicable to all participants.

 

Course Description

This course builds on core budgeting principles and introduces advanced techniques designed for Chartered Professional Accountants. Through presentations, discussions, and group case study analysis, you will explore how effective budgeting supports organizational performance and strategic decision-making. Topics include budgeting models, processes, communication strategies, and emerging tools such as artificial intelligence (AI). You will also examine how budgets can be developed and implemented in a way that aligns resources, engages stakeholders, and supports the organization's overall value equation.

Applicable for

CPAs in any sector or level or those at senior levels who want to create or influence effective budgets.

Learning Objectives

  • Define basic budgeting principles and terms. 
  • Explore backward analysis and forward-looking performance metrics. 
  • Apply modern communication approaches to support effective budgeting and foster an organization-wide budgeting mindset. 
  • Use budgets to manage performance and achieve organizational objectives. 
  • Understand recent advancements in the use of AI for budgeting.

Content

  • introduction and budgeting basics
    • a short review of basic budgeting terms and principles will get participants into the budgeting mindset
  • overall value equation
    • how do you take your historical reference and make it into a forward-looking budget that includes the back and front end?
    • The CAGE method will be introduced
  • back end
    • bottom-up planning and proposal of what will be offered and a budget to produce products from the product and service design team while factoring in future volume, with input from the sales and marketing team  
  • front end
    • engaging the sales and marketing team to plan the budget's revenue streams.
    • product or service delivery, sales, and marketing teams should rationally consider and speak about what’s feasible in the market
  • artificial intelligence for budgeting
    • an overview of the advancements in the use of AI for budgeting

Belinda Lucoe
Belinda Lucoe is a financial management leader with more than 25 years of experience in budgeting, forecasting, strategic planning, risk management, and organizational leadership within the British Columbia Public Service. Throughout her career, she has provided financial advice to senior executives, led high-performing finance teams, and managed complex operating and capital budgets. Belinda has also facilitated financial management and budgeting courses for Government and CPA professionals for many years, helping participants strengthen their financial planning, analysis, and decision-making skills through practical, real-world application.
Doris Good
Doris Good, CPA, CMA, MBA is an Associate with Gratitude Learning. She has twenty years of experience with the private sector in international manufacturing and retail businesses. Doris worked as an auditor and training manager for the BC Provincial Government. During her tenure with the Ministry of Finance, she was awarded the Apex Award in Leadership for her work in professional ethics training. Doris has been involved with developing and delivering training to accountants for seventeen years, starting with the CMABC and CPABC Preparatory Program. She has also developed custom ethics programs for university business faculties and corporation accounting staff. Doris was appointed a director of the first board of CPABC after a directorship on the board of CMABC. She completed her CMA at Simon Fraser University, earning the David Aplin Leadership and Strategic Management Award. Doris earned her MBA from Royals Roads University, winning the Founders Award for Leadership and Sustainability.
