This 3-hour on-demand course, The Uniqueness of the Indigenous Environment in British Columbia, was developed by the CPABC Professional Development and Indigenous Engagement teams with funding support from the CPA Education Foundation (CPAEF) and in collaboration with Indigenous authors, reviewers, advisors, legal contributors, and other subject matter experts.
Designed specifically for the British Columbia context, this course explores the unique diversity of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples and communities throughout the province. With more than 200 of Canada's 600+ First Nations and 38 Métis Chartered Communities located in BC, the province's Indigenous landscape is unlike any other in Canada. Building on foundational Indigenous learning, the course examines histories, cultures, governance structures, rights, and contemporary realities to help CPAs develop a deeper understanding of Indigenous Peoples and communities in British Columbia and support more meaningful engagement and relationship-building.
As relationships between Indigenous Peoples and Nations and British Columbians continue to evolve and strengthen, understanding the unique Indigenous environment in BC has never been more important. The knowledge and perspectives shared throughout this course can help CPAs better plan, consult, advise, support, collaborate, and engage with Indigenous governments, organizations, businesses, and communities. While reconciliation is an ongoing journey, increasing our understanding of Indigenous histories, experiences, and perspectives is an important step toward building stronger relationships and contributing to a more inclusive future for all.
